Juniors - Ages 8-9 Years

Taking the next step in their dance journey

The Junior years are where many dancers begin to find their rhythm.

With strong foundations already established, students start developing greater confidence in their abilities, a stronger understanding of technique and a growing sense of responsibility within the classroom. They become more aware of how their bodies move, how dance styles differ and how consistent practice leads to progress.

At this stage, dancers are often eager to learn, challenge themselves and explore new opportunities. It’s an exciting age where confidence grows alongside capability.

Whether your child dances recreationally or is interested in examinations and performance opportunities, our Junior program provides the perfect balance of encouragement, challenge and enjoyment.

Jazz

Jazz classes focus on energy, performance quality and technical development.

Students work on kicks, turns, jumps, flexibility and musicality while learning dynamic choreography that challenges both their technique and confidence. Jazz encourages dancers to develop their stage presence while continuing to build strength and coordination.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop allows students to explore a different style of movement while developing confidence, musicality and self-expression.

Classes are energetic, engaging and designed to encourage creativity while improving rhythm, coordination and performance skills.

Ballet

Ballet remains a vital part of every dancer’s training.

Students continue developing posture, alignment, balance, flexibility and strength while learning more complex exercises and combinations. Ballet helps dancers build discipline, control and technical understanding that supports every other genre they study.

As dancers progress, they continue working towards examination pathways and advanced ballet training.

Acrobatics

Acrobatics continues to build strength, flexibility and body awareness through progressive skill development.

Students work towards more advanced acrobatic skills while maintaining a strong focus on safety and technique. Acro supports overall dance training by improving strength, flexibility and confidence in movement.

Tap

Tap develops rhythm, timing and musical awareness.

Students learn increasingly complex rhythms and combinations while improving coordination, listening skills and confidence. Tap challenges dancers to think musically while developing precision and control.

Developing Strong Technical Foundations

As students move through the Junior program, classes become increasingly focused on technique, strength and performance quality.

Dancers learn to apply corrections more independently, refine their movement and develop greater control, coordination and musicality. They begin to understand not only how movements are performed, but why they are important within each style.

This stage is about creating strong, confident dancers who are prepared for more advanced training in the years ahead.

Growing Through Examinations

Many Junior dancers choose to participate in examinations as they continue progressing through their training.

Examinations provide students with achievable goals and valuable feedback while encouraging commitment, perseverance and pride in their accomplishments. They also help dancers develop confidence by celebrating their progress and recognising the hard work they put into their training.

Our teachers work closely with students throughout the year to ensure they feel prepared, supported and confident.

Building Skills for Life

Dance training during the Junior years extends far beyond technique.

As students face new challenges and continue working towards their goals, they develop valuable life skills including:

• Confidence and self-belief

• Commitment and responsibility

• Resilience and perseverance

• Teamwork and respect

• Time management and organisation

• Goal setting and achievement

• Leadership through positive example

These skills support students not only within the studio but throughout school and everyday life.

Performance Opportunities

Junior dancers have the opportunity to perform in our annual concert, where they showcase their progress and celebrate their achievements alongside their classmates.

Students may also be invited to participate in Performance Teams, providing additional training and opportunities to represent BPA at competitions, community performances and special events throughout the year.

These experiences help dancers develop stage confidence, teamwork and a deeper love of performing.

Preparing for the Intermediate Years

The Junior program bridges the gap between foundational training and more advanced development.

By the time students progress into our Intermediate program, they have developed stronger technique, increased confidence and a greater understanding of dance as both an art form and a discipline.

Most importantly, they have developed the habits and mindset needed to continue growing as dancers.
