You've booked the dance class.
Your child has been talking about it all week.
Then you arrive at the studio and suddenly they're hiding behind your leg saying they don't want to go in.
Welcome to first dance classes.
Starting something new can be exciting, nerve-racking or a strange combination of both, especially for children.
If your child is preparing for their first dance class at BPA Dance Studio, here's what you need to know.
THEY DON'T NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING BEFORE THEY ARRIVE
Seriously.
Nothing.
They don't need to know dance terminology.
They don't need to know choreography.
They don't need to be flexible.
They don't need to know how to point their toes.
And they don't need to practise before coming.
A beginner is supposed to be a beginner.
Our teachers are there to teach them.
ARRIVE WITH ENOUGH TIME TO GET SETTLED
Rushing through the door already stressed isn't an ideal way to begin something new.
Give yourself enough time to arrive, work out where you're going, get your dancer organised and allow them a moment to take in the environment.
For younger children especially, that little bit of settling time can make a difference.
THEY MIGHT BE NERVOUS
Even if they've spent the entire week begging to go.
The idea of dance class and actually walking into a room full of new people are two different things.
Some children are immediately comfortable.
Some take a little longer.
Try not to make their nerves feel like a big problem.
A simple, positive approach can help:
"You haven't done this before. Your teacher will show you what to do."
They don't need a twenty-minute pep talk.
They need to know it's okay to be new.
THEY MAY NOT COPY EVERYTHING PERFECTLY
They won't.
And nobody expects them to.
Your child might watch another dancer when they're unsure.
They might go the wrong direction.
They might forget the combination.
They might spend the first part of class working out what on earth everyone else seems to know.
That's learning.
One class is not a test of whether your child is "good at dance."
WHAT SHOULD THEY WEAR?
The appropriate clothing will depend on the class and program your child is attending.
If you're unsure about uniform requirements for your child's class, check with the BPA team before you arrive.
Most importantly, we want dancers appropriately dressed and able to move safely.
Once you're enrolled, our team can make sure you understand the requirements for your dancer's classes.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING CLASS?
The exact structure varies depending on age and dance style.
Generally, dancers will be guided through age-appropriate activities and exercises before working on the skills relevant to their class.
For younger children, this may involve more repetition, music and playful activities.
Older dancers may work more specifically on technique, combinations and choreography.
Your child's teacher will guide the class.
They don't need to know what's coming next.
WHAT IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE?
They will.
So will everyone else.
Dance is learned through repetition.
Making a mistake doesn't mean your child can't dance.
It means they're learning something they couldn't already do.
That's the whole point.
DON'T ASK "WERE YOU THE BEST?"
After class, try asking:
"Did you have fun?"
"What did you learn?"
"What was your favourite part?"
"Was there anything that felt tricky?"
Dance doesn't need to immediately become something children feel they have to be the best at.
Their first experience should be about discovering what it's like to learn and move in a dance class.
GIVE IT TIME
Sometimes children walk out of their first class completely obsessed.
Sometimes they need longer to settle.
If your child was nervous, spent part of the class watching or didn't immediately come out declaring dance their life's purpose, don't panic.
They've just experienced an entirely new environment.
For some children, the second class feels dramatically different simply because now they know where they're going, recognise their teacher and understand what happens when they walk through the door.
