WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD START DANCE?

If your toddler starts moving the second they hear music, you've probably wondered:

Is it too early to start dance classes?

Or maybe your child is four or five and you've suddenly realised everyone seems to have already started activities and you're wondering whether you've left it too late.

There isn't one perfect age when every child needs to start dancing.

Children can begin exploring movement from toddlerhood, start their first structured dance experience during the preschool years, or walk into a dance studio for the first time once they're at school.

At BPA Dance Studio in Berrinba, our classes are structured so children can begin at an age and stage that's appropriate for them.

CAN TODDLERS REALLY DO DANCE CLASSES?

Yes, but toddler dance shouldn't look like an older child's dance class.

Toddlers are still developing coordination, listening skills, balance, language and confidence in new environments.

A good toddler movement program takes that into account.

At this age, we're not expecting tiny dancers to perform perfect ballet technique.

We're introducing them to things like music, movement, rhythm, following instructions and participating in a group environment in an age-appropriate way.

For our youngest children, parent-supported movement also allows them to experience a class while still having the security of their grown-up nearby.

DANCE CLASSES FOR 2 TO 3 YEAR OLDS

Around two and three, children are beginning to become more independent, but they're still very little.

Dance classes at this age should feel fun.

Children can begin learning how to follow their teacher, move with a group, recognise basic movements and participate in simple routines and activities.

They're also learning things that have nothing to do with perfecting a dance step.

Waiting for a turn.

Listening.

Following directions.

Trying something new.

Being part of a group.

And becoming comfortable walking into their class each week.

These little skills add up.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS SHY?

That's okay.

Some children run into their first class without looking back.

Others stand close to Mum or Dad and watch.

Starting dance means walking into a new room, meeting a teacher, seeing unfamiliar children and learning a completely new routine.

That's a lot when you're three.

We don't measure whether dance is right for a child based solely on how confidently they walk into their very first class.

Familiarity can make an enormous difference.

As children learn their teacher's name, recognise the room, understand the class routine and see familiar faces each week, many gradually become more comfortable participating.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY?

You don't need to test them at home.

Interest is a pretty good place to begin.

Maybe they dance around the lounge room.

Maybe they're constantly performing.

Maybe they copy dances they see.

Maybe they've been asking to try ballet.

Or perhaps you're simply looking for a weekly activity where they can move, learn and interact with other children.

They don't need to already know how to dance before they come to dance class.

That's what the class is for.

TODDLER AND PRESCHOOL DANCE CLASSES IN LOGAN

BPA Dance Studio is located in Berrinba and welcomes families from Browns Plains and across the Logan area.

Our youngest dancers can begin with age-appropriate movement and preschool dance programs before progressing into our school-aged classes as they grow.

That means your child's dance experience can grow with them rather than trying to fit a two-year-old, five-year-old and eight-year-old into the same style of learning.

SO, WHAT'S THE BEST AGE TO START DANCE?

The best age is the age when your child is interested and you find a class that's appropriate for their stage of development.

For one family, that's toddlerhood.

For another, it's preschool.

For someone else, it's their first year of primary school.

Starting earlier doesn't automatically make someone a better dancer, and starting later doesn't mean they've missed out.

The most important thing is giving them an appropriate place to begin.

Looking for toddler, preschool or kids' dance classes in Logan? Get in touch with BPA Dance Studio and tell us your child's age. We'll help you find the right place to start.

Yep. These take us through 23 October and start moving from broad parent-search content into stronger Ready Set Dance and preschool SEO.
