HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DANCE CLASS FOR YOUR CHILD
Choosing a dance class for your child can feel a little overwhelming, especially if they have never danced before.
Ballet? Jazz? Tap? Hip hop? Acro? What if they want to do everything? What if they're shy? What if they're full of energy and you genuinely cannot imagine them standing still long enough to learn ballet?
The good news is that there isn't one "right" style for every child.
At BPA Dance Studio in Berrinba, we offer dance classes for toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged dancers, teens and adults, with different styles and pathways designed to help dancers find somewhere they feel comfortable, challenged and excited to learn.
Here's what we recommend considering when choosing a dance class for your child.
START WITH THEIR AGE
Age is usually the easiest place to start.
Very young dancers don't need a highly technical class where they're expected to stand at a barre and concentrate for an hour. They need movement, music, imagination, repetition and a class designed around how young children actually learn.
That's why our youngest dancers begin with age-appropriate preschool programs before progressing into our school-aged classes.
As dancers get older, there are more opportunities to explore individual styles including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and acro.
Your child doesn't need to know exactly what they want to do before they begin. Finding their favourite style is part of the experience.
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILD ALREADY LOVES
Watch what your child naturally gravitates towards.
Do they constantly make up dances when music comes on?
Are they always upside down, cartwheeling through the house or trying to teach themselves tricks?
Do they love energetic music and big movements?
Are they fascinated by ballet?
Do they love performing for everyone who will watch?
Their personality and interests can give you a great starting point.
A child who loves tumbling and physical challenges may be drawn to acro. A child who loves expressive movement might enjoy jazz or contemporary styles as they get older. A child who loves rhythm may enjoy tap or hip hop.
And sometimes, the class they fall in love with is completely different from what anyone expected.
DON'T WORRY IF THEY'RE SHY
Parents often tell us that their child loves dancing at home but becomes shy around new people.
That's completely okay.
Starting a new activity means meeting a new teacher, entering a different environment and learning a new routine. Some children walk through the door ready to perform immediately. Others need time to watch, understand what's happening and become comfortable.
Being shy doesn't mean dance isn't for them.
For many children, having a regular class, familiar teacher and familiar group of dancers can gradually help them feel much more comfortable participating.
The goal isn't to force confidence. It's to create opportunities for it to develop.
CONSIDER WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO GET FROM DANCE
Not every child walks into a dance studio because they want to become a professional dancer.
And they don't need to.
Families choose dance for all sorts of reasons.
Your child might need an activity that gets them moving each week. They might want to make friends outside school. They might love performing. They might need somewhere to channel their energy. They might want to develop their technique and take dance seriously.
Some dancers come once a week because it's their favourite afternoon activity.
Others discover that dance is their thing and gradually add more classes as they grow.
Both experiences have a place at BPA.
SHOULD MY CHILD DO MORE THAN ONE STYLE?
They absolutely can.
Different dance styles develop different skills, and many dancers love having variety throughout their week.
You also don't necessarily have to choose your child's entire dance journey from day one.
Start with an age-appropriate class or a style they're excited about. As they become comfortable and discover what they enjoy, you can explore other options.
For existing BPA dancers, adding another class can also be a great way to try something new while keeping the class and teachers they already know.
WHAT IF I CHOOSE THE WRONG CLASS?
This is probably the biggest thing we want parents to know:
You don't need to be a dance expert before enrolling your child.
That's our job.
Tell us your child's age, experience, personality and what they're interested in, and the BPA team can help point you towards an appropriate class.
We'd much rather help you find the right starting point than have you trying to decode a dance timetable by yourself.
