READY SET DANCE AT BPA: A PARENT'S GUIDE
If you've been looking for preschool dance classes, you might have come across READY SET DANCE.
But what actually happens in a preschool dance class?
And how do you know whether your little one is ready?
At BPA Dance Studio in Berrinba, our preschool programs give young children an age-appropriate introduction to movement, music and dance without expecting them to learn in the same way as an older dancer.
Here's what parents need to know.
WHAT IS READY SET DANCE?
READY SET DANCE is designed specifically for preschool-aged children.
Rather than taking an adult or school-aged dance class and simply making it shorter, preschool dance is built around how young children learn.
Classes incorporate movement, music, imagination and age-appropriate activities to introduce little dancers to the foundations of dance.
For your child, it feels like fun.
Behind that fun, they're practising coordination, balance, rhythm, listening, movement, memory and participation.
THEY DON'T NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DANCE
This is important.
Your preschooler does not need to know anything about dance before they start.
They don't need to know ballet positions.
They don't need to be flexible.
They don't need to know choreography.
And they definitely don't need to be able to concentrate like an eight-year-old.
They're coming to class to learn.
For many children, simply becoming comfortable entering the studio, listening to their teacher and participating in a group is part of their first dance experience.
WHAT DO PRESCHOOLERS LEARN THROUGH DANCE?
Obviously, we teach dance and movement.
But preschool dance gives children opportunities to practise many other skills too.
They're learning to listen to instructions.
They're learning to remember sequences.
They're practising balance and coordination.
They're learning where their body is in space.
They're taking turns.
They're participating alongside other children.
They're becoming familiar with having a teacher outside their home or childcare environment.
And, importantly, they're getting an opportunity to move.
These skills develop gradually. We aren't expecting perfection from tiny dancers.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS VERY ENERGETIC?
Bring them.
Preschoolers aren't supposed to have endless attention spans.
Some children are naturally quiet and observant. Others seem to have enough energy for six people.
An age-appropriate dance environment gives energetic children somewhere to move while also gradually practising things like listening, following instructions and participating in structured activities.
Being energetic doesn't mean your child is "bad at dance."
Sometimes it means they really enjoy moving.
WHAT IF THEY'RE SHY?
That's okay too.
We see all kinds of personalities.
Some children arrive ready to introduce themselves to everyone.
Some barely want to leave their grown-up.
A shy first class doesn't tell us what that child's dance experience will eventually look like.
Routine helps.
They start recognising their teacher.
They know where they're going.
They begin understanding what happens next.
They recognise other children.
What was once completely unfamiliar starts becoming their normal weekly dance class.
WILL THEY PERFORM?
Performing can be a really exciting part of being a dancer.
For preschool children, the experience of learning something during class and eventually sharing it can be incredibly special.
Parents often see a very different child by the end of a dance year compared with the little person who first walked through the studio doors.
Not because every child suddenly becomes fearless, but because they've had months of familiarity, practice and encouragement behind them.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY GET OLDER?
Preschool dance is the beginning, not the entire pathway.
As children grow, they're able to progress into school-aged dance classes and explore styles in more depth.
That might include ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, acro and other available classes.
The transition happens gradually as their age, ability to follow instruction and physical development change.
Our BPA team can help families understand when it's time to move into the next stage.
